Who was Saint Martin?

St Martin's Church East Woodhay is dedicated to St Martin of Tours.

In the stained glass window just by the pulpit, he is shown while still a young Roman army officer cutting his cloak in half, so that he could give half to a beggar who did not have sufficient clothing to keep him warm.

St Martin was born sometime around 315 AD at Sabaria in Pannonia (now the city of Szombathley in modern Hungary).

After leaving the army he spent time as a recluse on an island off the Ligurian Coast before founding a religious order at Liguge. An active missionary he became Bishop of Tours in 370. He died in 397 at Candes near Tours.
